 Theme: Self Actualization –Dream Big!!!

Twitter Quote:

If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. Henry David Thoreau

Self Actualization is about becoming what you are capable of becoming…to realize, or to work toward, your full potential. It is difficult to do this if you have not thought about where you want to be. I encourage you to “DREAM BIG”. Think about what your most fantastic life would look like. What would you be doing? What educational goals would you have achieved? Where would you live? What kind of work-life balance would you have?

Today…start thinking about who you are, what you like and don’t like, what is good and what is bad for you, where you are going, what your mission is. Start to create a vision of what you would like your life to look like. To help guide your thinking…imagine that a miracle happened in your life, and you got the chance to live your perfect life…what would that look like?

Create a vision of your ideal life and starting working toward this life that you have imagined!

Theme: Independence – Get Going! Take Your Power Back!

One of my favourite mantras is “Show up in your own life!” When I am feeling like I don’t have any control over my life, feeling overwhelmed…and sometimes even secretly (sshhhh!) feeling like blaming others for how I am feeling…I kick my own butt. There is nothing worse than feeling powerless…for anyone!  That is what you are doing when you blame others for how you are feeling, for the tasks you are not able to accomplish, your lack of motivation…etc. It is not easy, but it is so important to switch that focus to asking yourself, “what can I do to make this situation better?”… “What is within my power right now?” Showing up in your own life really means taking an active role in planning and doing the work that gets you closer to achieving your daily goals or on your way to your long term destination.

This weekend…think about what you can do to get tasks done. What you can do to shape an outcome? For example, don’t wait until a professor has completely explained a topic to your satisfaction. If you don’t understand fully, email them to clarify, book time to meet with them, check out other explanations on the web, ask your classmates for help…and so on. Show up and make it happen for yourself despite setbacks. Go out and be self directed and find creative and different ways to get your life under YOUR control. It is not always easy to do this, but it feels so much more motivating when you do. Be the Master of your own fate….

Yesterday was the last day to add/drop courses or to withdraw from your program at Mohawk College. It is a stressful moment when you need to decide if I will be “Stepping Up” or “Stepping Down”. It is brave to make the decision to leave your program because it is not the right fit; it is also brave to stick it out. The most important thing is that it is your well thought out decision. You are now 2 weeks into classes and a real decision and plan needs to made to keep you going. How are you going to make it through the times that you are overwhelmed or feeling like things are coming at you too fast to keep up? How will you be self directed in developing solutions and implementing them? It is important to know when your most productive times in the day are.

For the next few days…think about the times where you seem to be able to get everything done with ease, where it felt great to just work through everything that needed to be done. The times that you minimally had to force yourself to do important tasks like assignments, chapter reading or studying for tests. Also, think about the time of day that you are least effective. Once you have observed yourself for about a week and made note of your most effective times in the day, try to plan to study or get assignments done during those times and “play” when you are lower energy or less effective!
