Theme: Empathy – Being Kind to Yourself/Others – not “beating yourself up”
Stop the habit of wishful thinking and start the habit of thoughtful wishes.
eLearn Module: Empathy
Chances are that you did not get as caught up over the fall break as you wish you had. Are you finding that you are more stressed now? Feeling overwhelmed? Usually when people feel stressed and overwhelmed they tend to have very harsh evaluations of themselves. Well…so what…you didn’t get done what you had planned. Perhaps you over promised yourself what you could deliver! Sometimes your body and mind knows better. Maybe you needed the rest and break from the constant flow of academic expectations. Step out of the mindset of wishing that you had done more and thinking that you are a bad student because you failed to meet expectations (ones that were too high and not balanced). If you want to get back on track and stop feeling overwhelmed, you need to be kind to yourself. Focus on what you do well. Take one small step at a time. Try to avoid the “Black and White” thinking pattern of setting your To-Do list to high and defining success by only achieving everything on the list. Look at the “shades of grey” and make an attempt to notice how far you have come and the progress that you are making.
Today…focus on the process of moving toward your “getting caught up” goals, not on the end goal of being on track, fully. If you don’t take the time to focus on progress, rather than being done, you will become more overwhelmed and the chances that you will just give up are considerably higher.
Be kind to yourself, lower the overwhelming feeling and make progress!
