Learning is a result of listening, which in turn leads to even better listening and attentiveness to the other person. In other words, to learn from the child, we must have empathy, and empathy grows as we learn. Alice Miller
Associated eLearn Module: Empathy
I hope you are all really enjoying your Reading Week…guilt free…doing whatever you need to do to feel more in control in the latter half of the semester. Sometimes getting caught up with school work helps people, sometimes taking time to rest & relax is helpful or sometimes “switching gears” and working to make money to relieve financial stress can help this week.
I have another suggestion to add to your “getting my act together” routine… “Pay it Forward”! Did you know that psychological research has indicated that “Random acts of kindness really do make you feel happier and in control” Psychology Today. Yeah I know! All you need to do is try each day to do at least one thing for someone else and you could start to feel happier and more in control of your life. Super easy!
My wonderful colleague, Rachel Adema-Hannes, has been organizing this amazing Pay it Forward campaign encouraging staff and students to get engaged and get involved. Seriously, try it! Do something and expect nothing in return. Psssst….here is the real secret for those of you not completely sold on this…you really do get something out of the empathy that you put out there…you learn, you become happier and you gain a sense of control over your world. Super worth it I would say!
Today… teach someone how to improve their writing abilities, help a friend with a math problem, discuss a theory that you learned in class with another student, tell someone you love their smile (this is how I met my amazing colleague Rachel!), let someone go ahead of you in line, pay for a person’s coffee, give money to someone in need…
There are many nice things that you can do for someone else in the spirit of Paying it Forward. Use your Empathy Power for good!!! Listen to what the world looks and sounds like from the perspective of another and try and do something to enhance their life. Learn from them.
